The Fantasy Football community collectively said “Son of a b****” this morning.
Le’Veon Bell may be facing a four game suspension to open the season. Per reports, he failed to take a drug test during the offseason. He didn’t fail a drug test, he just didn’t take one. He is going to appeal the decision, but this is going to make a lot of owners nervous.
Personally, I have Le’Veon Bell ranked as the number one player in Fantasy Football. An elite running back who is going to touch the ball at least 20 times a game is hard to come by, but that’s what Le’Veon Bell does. He has also averaged 119 total yards from scrimmage per game, which leads all players in the NFL since 2013.
(Read my argument for Le’Veon Bell at 1.01 in drafts here)
If Bell has to serve the suspension, where should owners draft him? There is no way you can take him in the first round of your drafts. Last season when he was suspended for the first two games you could still argue taking him in the first round. To be honest, I still took him as 1.01 in my league of record knowing he wouldn’t play in weeks one and two.
Four games is a lot different. If you take Le’Veon Bell in the first round you won’t have him for a fourth of the Fantasy Football season. There isn’t another running back you can take to match the production he would have had in another round. As much as it pains me, you can’t draft Bell in the first round if he’s suspended the first four weeks.
At the beginning of round three is where I start considering him. He’s still going to be elite when he returns. If you haven’t drafted another running back before Bell then I wouldn’t recommend him as your number one running back. But if you take another elite option early and then Le’Veon Bell in the third round you should feel okay with your team.
